SEO: Content Is A Game Of Many Inches

Let’s say that you’re walking through your local mall and a merchant calls out and invites you into her shop. You look around and the shop is inexplicably filled with several feet of shiny gold Spanish doubloons.

Spanish Gold Doubloons

The merchant hands you a big bucket and a trowel and tells you to fill the bucket with as many doubloons as you can carry.

Would you just fill the bucket half-way or maybe three quarters of the way to the top ?

No way. You would shovel doubloons into the bucket until it was filled to the brim and then some.

So, why do you neglect to fill out every square inch of SEO geography in the back-end of your e-commerce platform with precious and descriptive content ? Every unused character, every unused space for Meta Descriptions and every wasted opportunity to sing the praises of your website’s products with quality content is nothing less than leaving shiny Spanish gold doubloons on the shop floor.

Let’s use the Network Solutions (“NS”) back-end geography as an example for identifying the SEO geography that is available on your e-commerce platform:

- NS provides a “General” tab where you can write a short description for each product that can be as long as 255 characters;

- NS also provides space on the “General” tab where you can write a long description that is virtually unlimited in length and that has a full range of options for colors, font, size and page justification;

- NS provides an “SEO tab” where you can input extensive Meta Keywords, including both short and long tail search terms, that will attract the many prospective buyers on the internet;

- NS also provides space on the SEO tab for a 500 word description of your product;

- NS provides a “Gallery” that allows you to input an Image Description that describes the product when a mouse hovers over the picture on the website;

- NS also provides space on the “Gallery” tab for alternate text that the search engine bots can read when they are perusing your website;

- NS provides a “Category” page where you can write a short description for each category that can be as long as 255 characters;

- NS also provides space on the “Category” page where you can write a long description about the category that is virtually unlimited in length and that has a full range of options for colors, font, size and page justification; and,

- NS also provides “SEO” space on the “Category” page where you can input Meta Keywords for the category and a 288 character category description.

As you can see, Network Solutions and the many other e-commerce platforms that support quality websites have ample space for stating your case, praising your product and letting the search engine bots know just who you are and what you sell. These e-commerce platforms provide you with a virtual flagpole and halyard that you can use to raise a flag that aggressively and succinctly promotes the many merits of your product or services.

Yet, without fail, when we peek inside the kimono of the many e-commerce platforms that our clients utilize, we discover that many of these websites are not taking the time to fill out every SEO nook and cranny:

- A 255 character short description box may just have 100 or so characters of uninspiring content;

- A Meta Description box may be limited to a few terse key search words that the search engine bots will find to be just more of the same; and,

- Category pages are oftentimes ignored without content of any sort.

The geography of the back-end of a website is no different than the acreage on a farm. You have to plant seed on every inch of arable land with rich, fertile and well-written content if you want to improve and increase the yield of your crop. Seed the north forty with content, seed the south forty with content and seed every flowerpot and flower box that you can find with outstanding and well written content.

Remember, every seed of content that is not planted is just another shiny Spanish gold doubloon that you have left on the floor.
