A Virtual Assistant Will Not Sit Well With A British Man-of-War Captain

Saturday Night Live once did a skit in its heyday about the economic argument for using a Virtual Assistant.

Yes, that does seem somewhat far-fetched.

But here was the premise. A reporter was interviewing the Captain of a British Man-of-War during the late 1800s aboard a ship that was crowded with seaman slaving away at their incessant maritime chores.

The dialogue (as recollected 20 odd years later) proceeded thusly.

Reporter:                                            Captain, tell me about your daily schedule.

Captain:                                              Well, Madam, we sail for 1 hour and we do chores for 23 hours.

Reporter:                                            But Captain, don’t you think you would travel further if you sailed for
23 hours and did chores for one hour.

Captain:                                              Yes Madam, in the short-term you might be correct.  But in the long
term, the men would miss their discipline.

How many hours do you as a small business owner spend sailing and how many hours do you as a small business owner spend doing chores on deck?  If, as oftentimes happens, the chore hours are cutting into a large slice of the sailing hours, you will not be sailing very far or perhaps even for very long.

Small business owners succeed because they are outstanding at selling their “widget” to the marketplace.  The hours spent marketing such widgets and the hours spent enhancing the infrastructure necessary to support the sales and production of such “widgets” are vital to the success of a small business.

So why are you entering data in to Quickbooks once a week?  Why are you updating excel worksheets on a daily basis with production results?  Why are you banging out content or blog entries for your website or Facebook or Twitter when you hate to write?

Do you get paid to sail or do you get paid to do the chores?
